CERTIFIED BUDGET PROCESS/TIMELINES

The preparation of the budget begins in the fall of each year with the official count of certified enrollment on October 1. This certified enrollment report is audited by the district’s auditor each year, prior to being submitted to the Iowa Department of Education. The state aid and property tax revenues that will be received in the following fiscal year are based on the certified student enrollment, sometimes known as the headcount.

Providing a quality educational program, living within district revenues and maintaining good financial health require constant monitoring throughout the year to ensure sound budget management. For these reasons, the budget process is ongoing. As conditions change throughout the year, the budget may need to be modified to adapt to the changes. An Iowa public school district’s budget certification process concludes each year on April 15, the last day to certify a budget.
