HISTORY

Dollars for Scholars was founded in 1958 with the mission of helping to provide a college education for anyone who wanted one. Today, Dollars for Scholars is a network of community-based, volunteer-operated scholarship foundations in cities, towns and neighborhoods throughout the United States.

ABOUT

The mission of the SEP Dollars for Scholars Foundation is to provide educational incentives and financial scholarships to Southeast Polk graduates who wish to furthertheir education.

Since 2001, the Southeast Polk Dollars for Scholars Foundation has organized Scholarship Recognition Night to honor the graduating recipients and give recognition to those who made the many scholarships available.

INTENT

The intent of the foundation is to establish and administer a strong and growing endowment fund. Our ultimate goal is to award a scholarship to all eligible Southeast Polk Senior High and Harbor Alternative graduates who wish to further their education. Every household and business within our district has a stake in seeing our youth reach their highest potential. Whether their goal is to attend a trade school, junior college, business education, or university, the Southeast Polk Dollars for Scholars Foundation will support these young people in pursuing their educational objectives.

October 8 Dollars for Scholars Dinner and Auction

Saturday evening October 8, the Southeast Polk High School was the site of the annual dinner and auction.  The event was attended by over 300 community members who were graciously served a fine meal by high school students, delightfully entertained by the Chamber Singers, and enthusiastically participated in the silent and live auction.
The silent auction had many outstanding items for the bidding.  It was a game for many bidders as they tried to eat and keep on top of their bids at the same time.  The items included everything from hand-made American Girl Doll clothing, plant stands complete with a plant, gift cards from many local businesses, and beautifully handcrafted pieces.  Everyone with a winning bid was well rewarded.

The live auction was expertly engineered by long-time auctioneer and community member, Jim Beattie.  He kept things moving along with a great mix of humor and personal commentary about auction items.  All the items from the homemade candy and rolls to the double oven were purchased by happy bidders before 9:00 p.m.

The raffle was also happening at another table.  Robin Norris, along with the help of Southeast Polk Cheerleaders, was busy selling tickets to any and all who would approach.  The lucky winners received $100 gift cards for gas, meat, or deli-food.

Collectively, the events of the evening earned over $22,000 for scholarships.  Congratulations and thank you to all who donated, attended, bought, served, and entertained.  This is truly a generous community that makes the future of students a priority. Thank you and hope we will see you next year.
