Choose a book appropriate for your guided reading group. - Remove the entire baggie to take back to your classroom (note: baggie has identifying label on it).
- Put your clothespin on the basket, covering the corresponding label that matches your book baggie.
- Read, read, read! (note: keep baggies in a safe place).
- When you’re done with the books, return the baggie of books to the basket. Teachers are responsible for reshelving their books after using them.
- Return the clothespin to the clothespin storage chart.
- If a baggie or book needs maintenance of any kind (repairs, releveling, etc); put the entire baggie of books in the red basket on the counter, with a brief note explaining the problem. The Runnells Bookroom Committee will take care of the maintenance responsibilities.
Counter and Cabinets
- “We Both Read Books” - For one adult and one student. No checkout required. Excellent shared reading source.
- Poetry Collections - Same check-out procedure as guided reading books.
- Benchmark Books - Great resource for doing a running record with a student to find out their guided reading level. Please don’t use these books for regular guided reading group instruction. Reminder: When figuring out a guided reading level for a student, they should read with 90-94% accuracy on unfamiliar text. Keep comprehension ability in mind too!
- Bruce Larkin books - Guided reading levels D-H. Same check-out procedure as guided reading books. Books are not listed on tub by title. Just put your clothespin on the correct bin.
- Red Crate - This crate is ONLY for books or bags that need special attention (repairs, releveling, etc). The Bookroom Committee will take care of the maintenance obligations.
- Big Books - No check-out is required.
- Other supplies are available for your use

- Drawer of pencils, post-it notes, etc.
- Pencil Sharpener (inside tall cupboard)
- One electric outlet (inside tall cupboard)
- CD Player with headphones
- Storage in the room is for Bookroom Committee supplies. This is not a classroom storage area.
- The counter space can be used as a work area when small group instruction isn’t taking place in the room.
- Please do not leave “work in progress” on the counter when you need to leave the room. Thanks!
Small Group Instruction
- Please use this room for small group instruction!
- Please sign-up on the door.
- Other teachers may quietly check out books when small groups are engaged in instruction and learning.
- There is a round table perfect for small-group instruction.
- A large rug has been ordered for instructional opportunities on the floor.
Room Arrangement
- The “National Geographic” nonfiction collection has its own designated area on the south wall. Please follow the regular book check-out procedures.
- McGraw-Hill sets from the former series has its own designated area on the north wall. Please follow the regular book check-out procedures. Individual titles are not listed on the basket.
- Levels of guided reading books are clearly labeled in three ways.
- There are signs above each section of shelving.
- There are yellow level tags on each shelf.
- Each basket and baggie of books is labeled with the guided reading level, title, author, fiction/nonfiction, and number of copies. Nonfiction titles are highlighted in green on the book baskets.
Other "Stuff"
- Even if you only need a few books from a baggie, please take the whole baggie to your room.
- Yes, books from the bookroom can be sent home with students if they have a reading assignment for guided groups. Please keep track of who has what book, etc.
- Please don’t use these books for your classroom libraries for independent reading time.
- Teacher resource books are available for some of the books in the bookroom. The resource books are located in a cabinet drawer.
- Let’s help each other: If you make an activity guide, worksheet, lesson plan, etc; please make a copy and put it in the baggie for other teachers to borrow for their classrooms. There is a lot of great teaching going on at Runnells. Let’s share the wealth!
