Kindergarten students need birth certificates, physical examinations and certain immunizations before they can attend school. Free or low-cost immunizations are available through Polk County Health Dept. (515-286-3798) or at the weekly Southeast Polk Children’s Health Clinic in Altoona. Call Central Place Family Resource Center at 515-266-6795 for information.
Children must also have physical examinations sometime within the year before entering school, with proof of that examination and the immunizations presented to the school office by the time school starts.
Our goals for kindergarten are to...
- stimulate and promote a positive self-image for each child.
- work cooperatively to build a partnership between home and school that will support children throughout their school experiences.
- provide activities where children can discover learning through exploring and hands-on activities.
- draw content and activities from language arts, music, art, physical education, math, health, science, and social studies, with emphasis on the learning process rather than the product.
- recognize that play is a child’s work, and that play is a wonderful way to learn about yourself, others, and the world.
- appreciate each child as an individual, so we will design curriculum based on each child’s interests, needs, and learning styles. There will be a balance of large group, small group, and individual activities, where children can develop self-control, respect for others, and communication skills.

- help children develop problem-solving abilities and high-level thinking skills through questioning techniques, scientific investigation, and group problem-solving.
- promote good health and safety habits, and develop skill in coordinating body movements.
- provide an environment which encourages self-confidence, a sense of trust in adults and the environment, self-discipline and independence and appreciation for the individuality and creativity of others.
- promote positive attitudes toward school, an awareness and curiosity about the world around them, and a lifelong excite-ment toward learning.
- determine children’s individual needs, interests, and progress through teacher observation, student portfolios, progress reports and a checklist of learned behaviors.
