Important news from the Food & Nutrition Department -  Food Service is changing its meal charging policy. Starting April 2, no more charging will be allowed if your family meal account has reached -$25.00.   Once you reach -$25.00 and your student comes to school with no money or lunch from home, the student will be given an alternate lunch for $.75 – a sandwich and milk. Contact the Food & Nutrition Administrative Assistant, Cheryl Thomas, at 957-3432, or the Food & Nutrition Director, Kathy Nervig, at 957-3431 with questions.

Money Madness

As a culminating activity to our 6th grade Junior Achievement Biz Town unit, Spring Creek attended an assembly called Mad About Money: Pay Yourself First, sponsored by Iowa Insurance Division.

Through humorous skits the actors presented money management basics to the 6th graders. Ideas presented were as follows: deductions, budget, savings accounts, investment, positive and negative advertisements, and much more. These questions were posed: Did you think about the deductions? Is investing worth it? Did you get swayed by the propaganda? What's the true opportunity cost? Students were given the opportunity to participate in the skits to add to the hilarious improvisational presentations. All of Spring Creek was delighted to take part in this experience.

JA Biz Town Experience

by Denise Gulling

Will I be elected Mayor? What are my job responsibilities as CEO of the Radio Station? What product or service will I offer at the Distribution Center? What is my paycheck and how many paychecks will I get? Those were the thoughts running through the minds of the Spring Creek 6th graders as they prepared for their simulation at JA Biz Town.

Before they could venture to JA Biz Town, students had to learn what it takes to run a business and how businesses and people work together to form a community. They practiced several skills to help them become valuable members of their business team and community. The students had to fill out business expense forms, loan applications, and complete resumes and applications to apply for, and be assigned in one of the JA Biz Town businesses. The students learned how to write advertising: a magazine ad, radio ad, and a web page ad. Each student learned how to write checks, make deposits, and maintain a check register- just like adults do.

When they arrived at JA Biz Town, the students had a schedule of events including a town meeting where the Mayor announced the laws for the day, each business CEO reported on their services provided or products for sale, and all citizens were informed of the many opportunities available for them during the business day. Each business and its employees worked to create a thriving community that had an exchange of goods, services, as well as opportunities to invest in stocks. Each student earned two paychecks where they could spend those earnings on real products or services for sale.

The students returned to school, and upon reflection, many of them mentioned they would like to visit JA Biz Town many more times this year. Comments made by students included, "Cool! I really learned a lot. I worked really hard for my paycheck. If I could do it again, I would have the sales manager charge more for the product we made, so we could pay off our business loan faster." Of course, the comment most often heard was, "I should have been paid more!!!" From the many comments and hard work of the Spring Creek 6th graders, JA Biz Town proved to be a worthwhile and rewarding experience.
